We’re often asked if solar panels really make sense in British Columbia, and the short answer is YES! Because our spring, summer and fall are so sunny, we actually produce MORE power than we need!
Wondering What To Do With Extra Solar Power?
That’s where Net Metering comes in. Your electricity provider (Fortis or BC Hydro) buys back the power you’ve produced and not used, which gets stored in a Kwh (Kilowatt-hour) Bank for you to use later! Here is some valuable information on Fortis Net Metering and BC Hydro Net Metering.
What About Winter?
Kelowna gets just 16 days of sun in January, and Chilliwack gets 18; for reference, Calgary gets 27! The downside is there isn’t much power to be produced. On the positive side, you don’t need to worry about cleaning snow off your solar panels since they won’t be doing as much with the cloud cover and shorter days.
In most cases, British Columbia gets enough sun in the spring, summer and fall to fill up your kWh (Kilowatt Hour) bank and get you through most of the winter months without an energy bill. This is why solar panels finally make sense in BC!
